Handmade notebooks with open binding
Recently I got an order from a client to make some handmade notebooks as gifts for their friends. These notebooks have been customised to match the personal requirements of each recipient, and they have been handmade with love and care.
These two notebooks are quite different from the ones I have made so far. Not only have I used handmade paper created from cotton rags this time, but the stitches and binding are open for all to see. š The handmade paper is completely acid and lignin free, which means that inks will last on the paper for a long time.
One notebook bears a water colour illustration and brush lettered title “Ballad Nocturne” which is sewn into the fabric cover. The gear on the side allows the writer to keep the cord in place, thereby keeping the notebook close when not in use.
The other notebook has a hard cover covered in handmade paper created from banana plant fiber. It is gorgeous and quite strong; you won’t be able to tear this easily. The front cover contains a metal leaf and flower ornament which is connected to a chain and clasp. The edge of the back cover contains a ring to which you can attach the clasp, thereby keeping the book close.

I was contacted by Hridesh because he wanted to send a gift to someone special for Rakhi. He wanted me to create a notebook for her, inspired by the concept of birds and nest.
I decided to create a set of 3 notebooks which can be strapped within a strong cover made of chipboard. The straps are elastic bands with colours that match the overall theme of the set. I painted the entire cover with light watercolours and sketched images of birds and birdhouse. Upon request, I also added brush lettered name ‘Sini’ for whom the gift the intended.
The notebooks contain blank pages which are 120 gsm thick, and their edges have been distressed to give them a more handmade appearance. Each of the notebook has a cover of 300 gsm, and bears a hand sketchedĀ and painted illustration of a birdhouse.
The cover carries a proper elastic ribbon which is attached with the help of a metal buckle on the front.
This whole notebook set has been customised so that the person using it can relate to it and enjoy writing in it. The notebooks can be easily slid in and out of the cover for use.

Gunilla needed customised notebooks for her work, which would make it easier for her to store business cards at the same time. The idea was to create a mini business card folder inside the notebooks so that she could keep the cards there and use them whenever necessary.
The folder was created with paper, and sandwiched between two heavy cardstocks so that it would not make the notebook difficult to write on. I also did some watercolour illustrations on top of the notebooks, giving each of them a customised look. I created 14 notebooks in total, and each of them uses 90 gsm paper insideĀ for writing and 300 gsm cardstock for the cover. The papers are completely acid and lignin proof.

Birdsong Notebook
Jayanti wanted a notebook for herself, with some decorations on the cover that relates to music and flowers. She also wanted a timepiece. I decided to use Chipboard pieces (that I cut using my machine) to create a foliage of branches and flowers, with two birds sitting on top right in front of the clock.
This notebook cover can be easily taken out and slipped on as per the convenience of the writer. The notebook is handmade, and the pages are of 100 gsm weight and high-quality with a slightly lined texture on them. The notebook contains 50 pages of A5 size. I sent Jayanti a sample of different types of papers, and I used the one she chose.

My client wanted a customised notebook for her friend. Since her friend is into music, I designed some illustrations of a guitar and drums with musical notes, and books that I could print on the pages of the notebook.
The print is permanent and also light enough so that the writing would be easily visible. I stitched the pages to create a black cover notebook with rounded curves on the corners. I also made a separate cover for the notebook, and the owners can have the option of taking the cover off if they wish to do so.
The notebook was an extra special project for me to design. š I decided to paint the cover with pink and yellow hues, covered in a vintage brown that creates a great look overall. To complete the illustration, I added some 3D embellishments which were not thick or heavy enough so as to make the notebookĀ cumbersome to use. The embellishments I have used are chipboard and metal trinkets which I then painted with waterproof and non-toxic paints. I wanted to give the cover a very ‘engineered’ look which appears a bit ornate and yet not too heavily embellished. Among the embellishments, I decided to use the number ‘3’ because it is one of the magical numbers that consistently appears in great epics. š
My client wanted the word ‘Meraki’ to be displayed on the cover as well. Meraki stands for creativity, and this whole notebook is intended to be a part of the inspiration to jot down new ideas and thoughts which are significant in the process of creating something heartwarmingly beautiful. I had brush lettered the ‘Meraki’ word and covered it in foil, which shines when it catches the light. I placed it inside an ornate pendant so that the word can be nestled in a special way on the cover of the notebook.
The pages I have used for this notebook are of 100 gsmĀ and are high-quality. They have some texture on them as well. The paper was chosen by the client from the samples I sent her, which means that this notebook is completely personalised in a way that is unique.

Deboleena Rakshit wanted a customised planner which she could use for her work meetings. As per her requirements, I designed 3 different layouts for 3 different notebooks. Designed layouts focus on the meeting details, contact information and the lists of things that she needs to do.
Moreover, I have provided unique stickers as well, which she can use to make the content more interactive. One designed sticker can show which content is more important than others. Other stickers are meant to denote travel, ideas and “to-do” tasks.
The notebooks are hand stitched and made from high quality imported paper. I also keep papers of different qualities in stock, and I send samples to my clients beforehand so that they can decide which paper they will need.
The leatherette cover is also imported and highly durable. It can be used for a long time, which means that you can buy new notebooks and slip them inside the cover when you are done with the current ones. The cover is hand stitched on all sides to create a nice visual interest.
